¶ Join the Canadaverse
¶ 1. Purchase a Meshtastic node
The first step in joining the Canadaverse is purchasing a Meshtastic device or node. Popular devices are listed in the Hardware section, including: Heltec V3, RAK 4631, T-Beam, T-Lora, T-Deck, and T-Echo.
Ensure your device is compatable with the North American LoRa frequency US915 (902–928 MHz).
WARNING: Operating the device without an antenna can permanently damage the radio.
Do not power on the device until you have connected an antenna.
¶ 2. Flash the latest firmware
Flash the device with the latest Meshtastic firmware. The easiest way is using Meshtastic's Flasher, right from your browser.
¶ 3. Configure your node
Install the mobile app for Android or iOS, and follow the instructions to connect to your node.
Configure the node using the following settings:
- Use the default key.
- Select the 'LongFast' channel, and the US region.
- Change the default MQTT root topic from
msh/UStomsh/CA/{your province shortcode}. For example,msh/CA/BCormsh/CA/ON. Note, this value is case sensitive. - Change the MQTT server to
mqtt.mt.gt

You should now be able to communicate with users from across the country. More detailed configuration information is available here.

To see available nodes (including your own, if location is enabled), check the maps at:

- If you're a ham, leave the encryption on, it is perfectly legal, as the key is known. Added bonus for nodes with call sign names (VE3XXX or VE3XXX-1 to VE3XXX-15) - your location will be sent to APRS-IS: https://aprs.fi/info/a/VE3XXX
